Roundabouts

I paint as a way of exploring the spiritual qualities of lived life. I am especially curious about ways of seeing the world that come from seeing the interior/exterior world in new ways. This series of paintings is inspired by the work of Aboriginal artists and mandalas, but it began through the rather mundane experience of getting lost on back-road roundabouts in France. I began thinking about the way we structure the experience of getting from one place to another. The circular pathways of a roundabout are quite different cultural modalities of disorientation and reorientation than an intersection controlled by a stoplight. All the paintings in this series are based on aerial photographs of actual places, often indicated or suggested by the titles, but, like Peruvian Nazca lines in their time, these are the markings of contemporary life on earth. When painted they become mandalas and tools for contemplation.  There are 26 paintings in this series. A few are posted below. Oil on canvas. 20” x 20”

ZERO AND OTHER DIFFICULTIES

This series explores the relationship between eastern and western notions of time and our relationship to numbers.  The idea of time as linear vs. time as multivalent is one of the concepts explored in this work.  My interest in these ideas was initially inspired by the book “The Nothing That Is – A Natural History of Zero” by Robert Kaplan.  Other texts that influenced me during this period are:“Numbers and Time” by Marie-Louise Von Franz; and an oblique reference to “Rilke on Love and Other Difficulties” by John Mood. oil on canvas. 48” x 48”

L’Immanence

This series is inspired by travels to Celtic stone alignments in England, Brittany and Corsica. Paintings on wood. 15 paintings in this series. Sizes vary, 12” x 8”. Some samples below.

 Touchstones

Oil and beeswax on linen. There are about 30 paintings in this series. Each painting is 10” x 10”

Iconic Fictions

In working on this series I begin with an image or artwork, often of historic significance, and explore it through the painting process where the past mixes with the present, where interior mixes with exterior experience to create new meanings. There are 12 paintings in this series.
